THE ALLIANCE 4 SUSTAINABLE FOOD ADVOCATES is a networking group created by Emily Brooks to unite those who support local agriculture, sustainable farming, local food production, and sustainable food systems.  The development of local, living economies rests on our nation-wide collaboration as we change the social norm towards agricultural sustainability, farmer & producer support, and small business development.

Why is Shared Harvest Connecticut so Damn Important?

"We need to redefine the consumer as a creator -- where the civic values of citizens create and sustain new food sytems.  Eating is an agricultural act.  It is also an econological and a political act as well.  Where else do we get 3 votes a day?  Where else do we have so much power to change the world we live in than in our food choices?"

Michael Pollan

Shared Harvest CT is a website that focuses on locally produced foods in a buy/sell/trade/barter/donate platform!  Shared Harvest CT is a Local Food Web which builds a Sustainable Community Food System and allows consumers to find locally produced food in another (NON-farm market) venue, provide producers with a separate sales venue, and allow for the donation of food to those in need.  Shared Harvest CT is a state-wide food distribution system allowing farmers, producers, and consumers to connect directly over the internet - in ONE interactive space and platform. Shared Harvest CT is an online farmer's market and food-bank rolled into one.  Food that might potentially go to waste can also be listed for donation to participating charities and food banks.

Shared Harvest CT works like an INSTANT ONLINE SELLING classified ad section and is available for free to all producers, farmers, and consumers.

How will Shared Harvest CT benefit our farmers, producers, chefs, restaurants, nonprofits, and farmland?  As one of the many pieces of the puzzle, Shared Harvest CT will:

  • Promote sustainable farming, sustainable food systems, and sustainable agriculture by providing alternative revenue and distribution options through web-based local food exchange and agricultural exchange transactions.
  • Preserve Connecticut Farmland, preserve farms, and enhance CT Agritourism through the promotion of eating local food and locally produced products by increasing the direct contact with and awareness of our food supply.
  • Increase the health and vitality of Connecticut residents through continued access to CT farmers and CT producers who provide sustainable, locally produced food.
  • Support food insecure populations by supporting the nonprofits and community organizations whose missions are to promote Connecticut food security.
  • Create an online interactive webspace for our residents that can unite all Connecticut and New England organizations - nonprofits, businesses, governmental agencies - whose mission and passion are to protect farmland, support farming, engage in local food consumer education, and farm market access.

Shared Harvest CT is designed to create a Sustainable Food Alliance Umbrella where consumers who are shopping for local food have immediate and direct access to supportive organizations, institutions, and passionate nonprofits who specialize in other separate, but equally important, areas of the Pro-Agriculture Support Chain.

Emily Brooks and the EA Alliance believe that collaboration is the only way to best meet our collective goal.  We believe that we are all pieces of the same jigsaw puzzle and that collective collaboration will lead to long-term profitability and growth in our agricultural sector and increased preservation of our farmlands.
